Founders in Jeans host Emily Jean sat down with our own Wheels Up Collective co-founder, Amy Winner for a refreshingly candid conversation about modern marketing, building resilient teams, and navigating an AI-powered future.
From early-stage startup scrappiness to the realities of scaling and the importance of culture, Amy brings decades of experience—and a humble, human perspective—when she describes what it takes to grow a company today.
Whether you’re a founder, marketer, or someone leading a small but mighty team, this episode is packed with insights you can put to work immediately. Enjoy the top five takeaways below.
1. Forget “Marketing” and Prioritize Curiosity, Hustle, and Customer Obsession
Early-stage founders often want to jump straight into polished campaigns and automated funnels, but Amy insists the real work starts earlier and is much scrappier.
As she puts it:
“You’ve got to hustle your tush off… find something that works and then repeat, repeat, repeat.”
She stresses that early marketing is not about perfection, it’s about listening, experimenting, and staying ridiculously close to your customers. And yes, that means founders shouldn’t outsource too early.
2. When the Ground Shifts, Lead With Radical Transparency
Uncertainty comes with the territory in all startups but Amy believes the worst thing leaders can do is withhold information.
Reflecting on Wheels Up’s toughest year, she shares:
“We lost half of our business in a couple months… but we pulled our core team close and talked openly about how we were going to get through it.”
With that approach, the team didn’t panic, it unified. Her leadership philosophy is simple: People can handle bad news, what they can’t handle is silence.
3. Don’t Chase Trends; Double Down on What Works
While many founders sprint toward the next shiny tool, Amy champions a different approach: discipline, data, and thoughtful debriefs.
“It’s so easy to do something 98% of the way and then move on… instead of stopping, learning what worked, and iterating. You might be automating the wrong thing.”
And in a fun twist, she calls out the surprise MVP of paid ad channels:
“Reddit outperforms every other one of our platforms… because it’s authentic.”
Forget trend-chasing. The winners? Teams that test, learn, refine, and repeat.
4. AI Will Expose Lazy Marketing
Amy is fascinated by AI, but she’s equally wary of what it means for the quality of marketing at scale.
“The volume of ads is going to explode… people are just going to become very numb to marketing.”
She worries less about AI’s capabilities and more about how marketers will use it:
“It makes me sad that AI… is being used to automate spam commenting on LinkedIn.”
Her prediction? Brands who rely solely on machine-generated tactics will blend into the noise. Those who stay personal, creative, and human will rise above it.
5. Hire Humans, Not Resumes
Amy’s most beloved hires weren’t seasoned marketers, they were people with heart, grit, and the kind of instincts you can't teach.
“Skill doesn’t make a team click… DNA does.”
She famously hired a nanny and a community health worker, both of whom became standout marketers.
Why?
“You can teach someone how to be a marketer… but you can’t teach compassion or drive.”
Her golden rule: Do not lower the bar. Hire the right humans, invest in them, and the magic follows.
